Furniture Refinishing FAQ
Common questions about refinishing, restoration, cost, and what to expect.
What is the difference between furniture refinishing and restoration?
Refinishing means renewing the surface finish: stripping the old finish, repairing the wood, and applying a fresh stain and topcoat. Restoration is broader: returning an antique or damaged piece to its original condition, which may include structural repairs, replacing missing parts, re-gluing joints, and matching original finishes.
How much does furniture refinishing cost?
It depends on the piece, its condition, and the finish you want. A chair might run $90–$200, a dining table $450–$900+, and a dresser $300–$800. See our pricing guide for typical ranges, and remember estimates are always free.
How long does furniture refinishing take?
Most projects take one to three weeks depending on the work involved, the finish, and our current schedule. Larger jobs like kitchen cabinets or full antique restorations take longer. We will give you a realistic timeline with your estimate.
Can veneer furniture be refinished?
Often, yes, as long as the veneer is sound. Veneer is real wood and can be cleaned up, repaired, and refinished. If the veneer is badly damaged or lifting, see our veneer repair service and we will let you know honestly what is possible before any work begins.
Can you match an existing stain or color?
Yes. Custom stain and color matching is part of what we do by hand. Whether you want to keep a piece close to its original tone or change the color entirely, we can match it.
Can water-damaged or antique furniture be saved?
Frequently, yes. Water rings, sun fading, loose joints, and old crackled finishes are all common and repairable. Bring it in or send photos and we will assess whether it is worth restoring.
Do you offer free estimates?
Always. Call (651) 748-9465 or send us a message with photos and a description, and we will give you an honest assessment and a fair quote at no charge.
Do you refinish kitchen cabinets?
Yes. Refinishing your existing cabinets can save a substantial amount versus replacing them, while giving them a hand-applied custom finish. If you would rather have a solid painted color, we also offer cabinet painting. We offer free in-home consultations for cabinet projects.
Do I need my furniture stripped, or can it just be refreshed?
It depends on the finish. A piece that is structurally sound with a finish that is just dull or lightly worn can sometimes be cleaned and revived. When the old finish is cracked, flaking, or hiding damage, stripping and refinishing give a far better, longer-lasting result. We will tell you honestly which your piece needs.
Will refinishing an antique lower its value?
For most everyday antiques and family heirlooms, a careful, sympathetic refinish makes them usable and beautiful again without hurting value. For rare or collectible pieces, the original finish can matter, so we give you an honest opinion first. See our antique restoration page.
Do you work with insurance claims for fire or water damage?
Yes. We restore fire-, smoke-, and water-damaged furniture and can provide a written, itemized estimate for your adjuster. See our insurance and damage restoration service, and check with your insurer on what your policy covers.
